Two studies came out in the past few days that managed to combine sex and stress reponse for both men and women. We think it might be worthwhile to delve into the depths of these issues.

In the chronologically first such study to hit the press, University of Valencia researchers find that just five minutes alone with an attractive female raise the levels of cortisol, the body's stress hormone; the effects are heightened in men who believe that the woman in question is "out of their league".

Researchers tested 84 male students by asking each one to sit in a room and solve a Sudoku puzzle. Two strangers, one male and one female, were also in the room. When the female stranger left the room and the two men remained sitting together, the volunteer's stress levels did not rise. However, when the volunteer was left alone with the female stranger, his cortisol levels rose.

"In this study we considered that for most men the presence of an attractive woman may induce the perception that there is an opportunity for courtship. While some men might avoid attractive women since they think they are 'out of their league', the majority would respond with apprehension and a concurrent hormonal response. This study showed that male cortisol levels increased after exposure to a five-minute short social contact with a young, attractive woman."

Cortisol can have a positive effect in small doses, improving alertness and well-being. However, chronically elevated cortisol levels can worsen medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and impotency.

This may seem like an attack on women, but women have a few complaints of their own. More to the point, Bayer published research that finds the following:

• 28% of women claim that email and internet are disrupting their love lives, with hand-held devices particularly to blame
• other mood-killing factors: long working hours (cited by 55% of women), tiredness (83%) and being too busy (74%)
• 1/10 women say their fear of pregnancy inhibits them in the bedroom, with 1/5 women admitting they shun contraception
• The survey found that on average British women have sex 1.4 times a week, but 6/10 women aged between 25 and 34 would like a more active sex life.
• 51% of women believe they reach their sexual peak in their 30s, but 66% say they had their most sex during their 20s.
• 65% say their partners do not make enough effort in the bedroom, however, 1/3 women never initiate sex and always let their partner make the first move.
• 4/10 women say it only takes a compliment to put them in the mood for sex, while 1/3 saying having more time to themselves would boost their sex life.
• more than 1/3 of women say they have not felt sexy for at least a month and 14 per cent claim they have never felt sexy.

Chef bowels consumed by eel

In a prank that's gone horribly wrong, a man succumbed to his own drunkenness and his friends' idiocy.

The hapless chef fell victim to a prank while drunk in the Sichuan, China. Doctors extracted the creature from the 59 year-old’s rectum after his death. The eel had devoured his bowels.

Apparently, this eel is an amazing survivor, being able to move even over dry land. It can even survive temperatures below freezing, months without water. It is mostly found in warm fresh-waters locations such as muddy ponds, swamps, canals, and rice fields. And now, in dead chefs’ rectums.

Considered a voracious predator, little is known about this fish:

Locals of Thailand report that the female swamp eel watches over the eggs until they hatch. Young swamp eels reportedly stay at the surface of the water in shallow areas and group together in dense schools as the female stands guard by observing their surroundings. Although it is unknown whether the female defends the young from predators, observations have shown that a protective nature is prevalent. This fish is known to have a hearty appetite and feed on a wide assortment of prey. The Synbranchus marmoratus, which is another swamp eel found in Central America and the northern part of South America, is known for it's interesting color changes. Aquarium observers have reported that these color changes are related to the different states of the fish and ranges from brown, blue to black with a violet sheen. Swamp eels are used for human consumption in areas where they are found and often sold live in market places since they can survive without water for extended periods of time.

She killed BF by sitting on him

Only in America.. This obese woman sat on her 120 lbs boyfriend during an argument, killing him.

Only a few months ago we were decrying the disastrous state of north-americans’ gut. This Cleveland woman got only 3 year probation for killing his much thinner boyfriend, also the father of her children.

Police said Mia Landingham and Mikal Middleston-Bey, who have three children together, got into an argument in August. During the altercation Landingham sat on Middleston-Bey.

Landingham pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Her attorney told said there was a long history of domestic abuse in the relationship. He asked the judge for leniency and pointed out she has no prior criminal record.

Landingham she was sorry for squashing the father of her children.

"I just want to say that I am sincerely sorry about this situation. I wish I could take it back,” she said.

Landingham was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours community service. She was immediately released from jail.

The victim’s family said they were surprised that she got no additional jail time.

"So basically you can say that I can go sit on somebody and get probation? I feel there wasn't no justice. My brother's gone and all she gets is three years probation," the victim’s brother said.

Though we’re all saddened by Amy Winehouse’s joining “Club 27”, I reminisce about some of her songs and also remember other similar deaths.

The State of the Nation’s gut

Not long ago we learned about a few prisons starting to refuse certain inmates because they were overcrowded and ill-equipped to deal with the morbidly obese (sic)k. Not long ago, such an inmate was able to smuggle a weapon inside the prison by hiding it inside his flabs.

It is a known feature of our era that just as we become fatter, we want to see thinner models. Kate Moss would’ve never been famous in times of lower average weight. Likewise, if corn wasn’t used in everything… actually, forget that, it’s a different topic altogether.

George Vera, 25, who had been charged with selling illegal copies of compact discs, was found to have been hiding a 9 mm gun in his 500-lbs flabs of fat. At that point, he had been transferred through several jails and searched multiple times, but nobody found his gun until he himself bragged about it.

Perhaps the biggest uproar was caused by Lizzie Miller, whose photo by Walter Chin appeared in US Glamour Photograph. Apparently, she’s considered too fat to model even for plus sizes..

Luckily, Lizzie has started receiving more work after the photo was published, and her agency told her that she does not need to lose any more weight.

Yet there are signs that things are changing in the fashion industry. Back in 2007, not long after a couple of models died from not eating enough, photos of a 27-year-old French model Isabelle Caro were blown up and shown to passers-by in a campaign by Nolita and having the blessing of the Italian ministry of health. As one could expect, the man behind the campaign is none other than our main man (as Ali G. would say), Oliver Toscani, the Benetton master.

The ad is shocking, but a necessary wake-up call in an industry where public opinion seems focused at the far end of the spectrum:

Designer Giorgio Armani queried the link between fashion and anorexia, commenting that "even people who take no notice of fashion get anorexic", while designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana described anorexia as a psychiatric problem with "nothing to do with fashion".

Luckily, there are models who are happy modelling plus sizes, though to you and me they still are thinner than most people. Crystal Renn’s career took off only after put some of the lost weight back and started modeling “plus” sizes.

Here’s what some designers think, as quoted by the Guardian:

Renn's agent, Gary Dakin, of New York's Ford Models, which represents models who are UK size 12 to 22, says that their novelty use is coming to an end. Instead they will be photographed for one simple reason: because they are beautiful.

"I have been in this business for 11 years and I have seen this debate ripple through the fashion world a number of times," he said. "This time, though, the momentum of the debate feels different." Style arbiter Stephen Bayley agrees. Bayley's book, Women as Design, is published this week and looks at how definitions of female beauty have changed over the centuries. "In periods when we are impoverished, as now, there is a vogue for voluptuous women," he said. "

But designers are, slowly, beginning to agree that larger models have a role. Antonio Berardi has talked of the trouble he has finding girls with a womanly shape. "We have to spend days altering things," he complained. "We add padding and pieces that work inside the clothes to exaggerate their bodies into a more female form. I don't want all those girls with pale skin who look the same. My family is Italian – I am inspired by a womanly aesthetic."

Roland Mouret agrees: "I see advertising going back to that powerful 1980s mentality, when girls like Linda [Evangelista] were ideal. Back in the 80s, when supermodels were several sizes larger than top models today, the clothes worked on bigger bodies," he added. "They were bright, bold, curve-enhancing."

Kate Smith, a size 16 and the highest earner at Hughes Models, said: "The number of plus-size models in the industry has quadrupled in the past few years, but we're still a tiny percentage of the whole modelling business.

"What does my head in is that I'm a model but I can't buy designer clothes that fit me. Everything is crawl-walk-run. We'll get to the point where every shape and size will be represented on the runway, but maybe not in my lifetime."

British Amazons: Female violence in UK

One woman was cleared of planting her stiletto through a man’s eye and brain. Two young women tortured a third for almost an entire day for sleeping with one's ex-boyfriend. A normal week in UK.

After learning about the woman stamping her stiletto through a man’s eye and brain, we are told that the next day she was cleared of any wrongdoing, on orders of a judge. Apparently, the man who suffered life-threatening injuries and underwent two operations was “uncooperative” and had been previously charged, though not found guilty. Here’s how the BBC describes the event:

A woman who kicked her stiletto heel through her boyfriend's eye and into his brain has been cleared of all charges on the orders of a judge.

Bradford Crown Court was told Staci Hargreaves, 34, kicked Gavin Taylor, 28, during an argument in a taxi. Mr Taylor became unconscious and had to undergo two operations in hospital. Miss Hargreaves, of Greater Manchester, was acquitted after a judge ruled there was no evidence against her claim she kicked in self-defence. On the second day of her trial, the defendant, of Stalybridge, was cleared of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and an alternative charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Directing the jury to find her not guilty, judge Peter Hunt said: "There is no evidence to lead you to the conclusion the defendant was not acting in instinctive, reasonable self-defence." The jury had previously heard Miss Hargreaves was wearing 3in (7.6cm) heels, one of which caused her boyfriend serious injuries. Jurors were told she was in the back of the taxi with two other people after a night out in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, when she kicked Mr Taylor after he turned round in the front seat. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was in hospital for a month. The court was told he refused to co-operate with police and to give evidence in the trial. The judge said it was clear everyone in the group had been "heavily intoxicated with drink". One witness said Mr Taylor had slapped Miss Hargreaves earlier in the evening, knocking her to the floor. The judge was also told of a series of convictions Mr Taylor has for violence dating back more than a decade.

In 2005 he was jailed for 16 months for false imprisonment following an incident in Greater Manchester in which a man was tied up and put in a car boot before being driven to a river where he eventually drowned. After being acquitted, Miss Hargreaves said: "I just want to get my life back together again."

As for the two women torturing their friend, the Telegraph tells us:

Lucy Viner-Mood, 22, and Lois Gibson, 18, locked Georgia Fenn in a flat for 18 hours while they beat her unconscious repeatedly. Miss Fenn, 19, suffered burns from a cigarette lighter, had her ponytail cut off and suffered two black eyes and a broken nose. The two flatmates attacked her in March after hearing that she had slept with Viner-Mood’s former boyfriend, Maidstone Crown Court heard. A judge, who described the attack as “evil”, sentenced Viner-Mood to five years in jail and Gibson to three years in a young offenders institute. The pair, both of Langton Green, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, each admitted false imprisonment and assault causing actual bodily harm. Anne Phillips, prosecuting, told how terrified Georgia tried to flee her attackers by trying to get out the front door but was dragged back for further punishment. She said: “Viner-Mood stopped Miss Fenn from leaving by grabbing her arm and took her away from the door pulling her back into the living room. “At this point Gibson then got a yellow red hot lighter and pushed it onto the victim’s chin for a few minutes and also burnt her hand.” Eventually, at 2pm the next day Miss Fenn was thrown out the flat wearing just a dressing gown and no shoes. She managed to stumble onto the streets with a broken nose, second degree burns to her chin, two black eyes and covered in blood. Police arrested Viner-Mood and Gibson the following day.

The Econocrisis hits Miss Venezuela

The economic crisis is proving more resilient than initially thought. After going through L and W, it is now at letter V, from Venezuela.

In short, as Reuters writes, the local "Miss Venezuela" organization -- which has landed the South American nation more international pageant titles than any other country -- announced on Wednesday it had slashed the number of national competitors to 20 from 30.

"We have had to tighten our belt a bit too," said Joaquin Riviera, organizer of the annual Miss Venezuela competition, which is wildly popular and draws huge TV audiences.

The next national winner will be chosen on September 24.

"I've asked Osmel to be a bit stricter choosing 20 girls, so we only have the best," Riviera added, referring to local beauty "czar" Osmel Sousa, who prepares the competitors.

Sousa denied the cuts, however, would mean fewer dresses or less plastic surgery for girls competing. Venezuela has one of the highest rates of cosmetic surgery in the world.

Venezuela's Stefania Fernandez, an 18-year-old brunette, won the Miss Universe 2009 title last month in the Bahamas, giving her country its second win in a row and its sixth in that pageant's history.

Venezuela is well-known for its successions in beauty pageants. Miss Venezuela is a big event in the country, and Venezuela has received 5 Miss World, 6 Miss Universe and 5 Miss International titles.

The World Values Survey has consistently shown Venezuelans to be among the happiest people in the world, with 55% of those questioned saying they were "very happy".

How important the pageant is to the national spirit and that feeling of happiness can be ascertained from the tenacity displayed by the contestants:

Thousands of entrants apply for the pageant each year. Some young women would try for up to five or six years consecutively trying to get one of the 26 to 32 titles that will enable them to compete in the final pageant. Venezuela's 23 states, capital, and two regions of Zulia state are always represented; some years other regions of the country will have representatives in the pageant.

Once a candidate is shortlisted for the pageant, she begins an intensive training program which can last for six months. She receives coaching in speech, physical fitness, make-up, modelling, and all the other skills required for the competition. Plastic surgery and cosmetic dentistry is optional and some delegates use padding. As the Miss Venezuela broadcast lasts up to four hours long, with countless musical numbers and dances, rehearsals require weeks of preparation. Contestants also participate in official photoshoots (lately done by Iván Dumont, after several years by Daniel Alonso) and also fittings by fashion designers. The evening gowns worn by candidates are a major source of politicking by Venezuela's domestic fashion houses, with top designers such as Mayela Camacho, Ángel Sanchez, Durant & Diego, and Jose María Almeida selecting candidates that they will dress for the final night, while other, newer designers compete to present designs for the pageant. As a general rule the evening gowns are always custom-designed for each of the candidates on the final night, and always by a Venezuelan designer. (…) The winners chosen to represent Venezuela in the major pageants undergo continuous preparation before they compete internationally. These efforts are funded by corporate sponsors like Pepsi Cola, Palmolive, Colgate, Ebel and Lux who were attracted to the pageant by its high ratings.

Competing in the pageant can get a contestant noticed and launched on a successful television or print career. At least a dozen well sought models come out of the pageant. Virtually all of Venezuela's female top models and television personalities are alumni of the pageant, including Maite Delgado (who competed in 1986 against future Miss Universe Bárbara Palacios, Alexandra Braun (Miss Earth 2005) and Dominika van Santen (Top Model of the World 2005)

Romanian prostitute burned alive in Vienna

Disturbing news coming out of Vienna: A Romanian prostitute had a fight with her pimp and his "associate" and in turn they poured a flammable liquid on her and set her ablaze.

Here’s the story according to Austrian Times:

A Romanian prostitute is in critical condition after a punter tried to burn her alive outside a night spot on Laxenburger Straße in Vienna-Favoriten.

Police spokeswoman Manuela Vockner said today (Mon) that the assailant had been into a row with 35-year-old Florentina M. inside the locale in the early hours of yesterday morning.

When she left it he was outside waiting for her and doused her with a flammable liquid before setting her on fire.

Vockner said police had only a vague description of the assailant and media reports that he had fled in a silver BMW might be inaccurate.

She added that police had not obtained any leads about the man’s identity from people who had been in the night spot at the time of the assault.

Vockner said the woman, who had burns on her face and upper body, was in critical condition in a Vienna hospital.

Hotnews.ro adds that the incident took place at the Romanians’ disco, around 3 am, and the woman had said before losing consciousness: It was Cretu. I trust she is not referring to Michael Cretu, a reputable music producer who married his star, Sandra.

What is interesting about prostitution in Austria is that under Maria Theresa, they were sent to Banat, a Romania province. Today Romania is the largest provider of prostitutes to Western Europe. In 1873 the law was reformed and prostitutes were obligated to register with the police and receive medical exams twice a week.

A newspaper article of October 27, 1874 reported that 6,424 prostitutes had received health certificates and were under observation by police and health authorities. According to police estimates, at least 12,000 more women lived on the proceeds of "free love" without being registered. Most of these were factory workers who received so little pay that they needed the additional income. Of the registered prostitutes, 5,312 were unmarried, 902 widows, and 210 married. The youngest was 15 and the oldest 47 years old.

In April 2007 1,352 female and 21 male prostitutes where officially registered in Vienna. In 2003, the oldest prostitute was a 71 year old Austrian woman, who offered her service in the second district of Vienna, the so called Leopoldstadt. The number of women working legally and illegally at least from time to time as prostitutes is estimated between 3,500 and 6,000; it is estimated that they totally serve 15,000 clients per day. A similar relation of prostitutes to population number can also be found in other Austrian cities. For example, in 2008 there were 120 registered prostitutes in Linz, which has approximately 10% of the size of Vienna.

A quarter of the arrested unregistered prostitutes had multiple infections with sexually transmitted diseases. On the other hand, according to the health authorities of Vienna, registered prostitutes are the most healthy group of persons.

Austria is a both a transit and a destination country for women and children trafficked from Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Nigeria, and sub-Saharan Africa for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation.

Most trafficked women are brought to Austria with promises of unskilled jobs, such as nannies or waitresses. Upon arrival they are often coerced into prostitution.

The moral of the story? It’s good to have at least two professions, in case one of them doesn't pan out..

Many years ago, in the current gallaxy, a book purporting to show a male’s inner thoughts was published. ‘twas called The Average American Male: A Novel and it sold well. Though in this age of suffocating political correctness I had expected to find numerous echoes, this was not the case. Now that the sequel was published, let us have a quick look at all the hoopla and videos.

Sure, I like to tell it like it is. But so does most other male, sick and disgusted of having to play a role he hates, only to get by, to avoid ending up in jail or to get laid. We’re all dawgs, it seems, and we need to pretend we’re not in order to please our biatches.

When, a while back, I revisited the old book of truth, I found it difficult to believe that it is one of the very few books transforming truth into entertainment in such a manner. Should I be surprised though, considering that only a few decades ago the Diceman was banned for life from MTV and there were feminist demonstrations against him?!

So what does the “average american male” think, really? Here’s a sample:

I recently learned about a University of Toronto study about spider love. It got me thinking...

A recent study done by Maydianne Andrade and Jeffrey Stoltz of the University of Toronto found that some ugly Australian spider female will devour the male after copulation UNLESS the male courts her first for 100 minutes.

I couldn’t help thinking of George Michael and his “Fast Love” song. He’d never make it as a spider..

There seems to be a flood of sex crime coming out of Romania which is - lest we forget - the number one exporter of prostitutes to Western Europe. If we are to believe the latest news, Romania is also the number one exporter of Gypsies. Coincidence?
