As luck would have it, I first listened to this track back in in the very early ‘90s, just as my native Eastern European country was getting its first taste of freedom. It is one of the first dance tracks I kept playing obsessively. It belongs to Beats International, a one-hit wonder group. The only one with staying power was Norman Cook, who later on found notoriety as Fatboy Slim.
BEATS INTERNATIONAL
DUB BE GOOD TO ME vs LINDY LAYTON - 03/03/1990
4 weeks at #1 - 13 weeks on chart
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty
You're listening to the boy from the big bad city
This is jam hot
This is jam hotFriends tell me I am crazy
That I'm wasting time with you
You'll never be mine
That's not the way I see it
Coz I feel you're glad you're mine
Whenever you're with mePeople always talk about reputation
I don't care about your other girls
Just be good to me
Just be good to me
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty
You're listening to the boy from the big bad city
This is jam hot
This is jam hotLove is a game of chances
So I'll take my chance with you
And you I won't try to change
We talk about it and I'd
Rather have a piece of you
Than out of nothingJust be good to me in the morning
Just be good to me in the afternoon or evening
Yeah just be good to me
I'm not the jealous kind
I won't tie you down
When you need me
I'll be around
I'll be good to you
You'll be good to me
We could be together, be together(Just be good to me)
(Just be good to me)
(Just be good to me)
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty
You're listening to the boy from the big bad city
This is jam hot
Obviously, the lyrics are written by a man and they represent a male’s fantasy. No real woman would ever say
- I don't care about your other girls
- And you I won't try to change
Here’s what Wikipedia tells us:
The track started out as in instrumental with the title "The Invasion of the Estate Agents". While also included as the B side to this single, it originally appeared as the B side to Norman Cook's 1989 single "For Spacious Lies". This instrumental track is heavily based on the bassline from The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" with a sample of the distinctive "harmonica" theme from the epic western film Once Upon a Time in the West, written by Ennio Morricone. This instrumental, in slightly remixed form, had vocals added from The SOS Band's "Just Be Good to Me" (as re-recorded by Lindy Layton) to form "Dub Be Good To Me". The track also features the distinctive vocals of David John-Baptiste, more commonly known as DJ Deejay or just DJ. The opening and closing line "tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty you're listening to the boy from the big bad city, this is jam hot, this is jam hot" was from Johnny Dynell's 1983 hit "Jam Hot" and became an instant classic and was repeated often, being used as the most common reference to the song. The song was a massive hit spending 4 weeks at number one on the UK singles chart in February 1990. It was the 7th best-selling single of 1990 in the UK. In the U.S., the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and #76 on the Billboard Hot 100.
I miss those times, when marriage was a far away, nebulous possibility and living together was a really serious thing. Where did that feeling go?
